Bridging the Digital Divide in the Digital Age: Strategies for Universal Access and Empowerment

In our interconnected world, the disparity in technological access is a catalyst for inequality," President Clinton wisely articulated at the dawn of the 21st century. This truth resonates strongly today as we stand at the precipice of a digital revolution that threatens to widen the chasm between the 'haves' and the 'have-nots.'

Join us on March 20th &21st  for the Dr. J.R. Smith Research Symposium at Jackson State University. The event will examine critical issues of  business including the digital divide and explore solutions for fostering a more inclusive world.

In my presentation on Technology, Education & Entrepreneurship in underserved areas, the discussion will examine core issues related to the digital divide. The central question we pose is "How can we transform the digital inequity that plagues underserved communities into tangible opportunities for access, education, engagement, and empowerment?"

In the wake of the pandemic, the world grappled with unprecedented educational disruption. School closures and the rapid pivot to online learning underscored technology's role as a keystone in the arch of education. However, this shift also magnified the stark disparities in access to essential resources like devices, reliable internet, and digital literacy skills, further entrenching educational inequalities.

As we explore this landscape, it becomes evident that the digital divide extends beyond mere connectivity. It encompasses gaps in advanced technological arenas such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, and expansive digital networks. Addressing these gaps is not just about laying a foundation for equitable access to technology (digital equity in education) but also about building a superstructure that supports a more just society—one where every individual can thrive in the spheres of work and entrepreneurship.

While it is true that the solutions to these complex challenges are still being uncovered, the path forward begins with asking the right questions—those that spark innovation and lead to actionable thought leadership. Through this presentation, we intend to catalyze a dialogue that aspires to a future where no individual is left behind in the relentless march of technological progress.

The commitment to tackling the digital divide must be unwavering, as it holds the key to unlocking the full potential of every global citizen. It's about ensuring that technology serves as a bridge, not a barrier, to opportunities for all.

Our collective engagement is a step toward fostering a digitally inclusive world. Together, we can build robust educational infrastructures that not only endure but also evolve with the changing technological landscape.

Empowering Communities

Jo-Anne Rolle, the dean of the School of Business at Medgar Evers College, City University of New York, is on a mission to transform underserved communities through the power of technology and entrepreneurship. As the Immediate Past President of the National HBCU Business Dean's Roundtable, Rolle emphasizes the need for economic engines within local communities to create job opportunities and wealth streams. "We are not going to make the change unless we find economic engines in these communities that are job creators," she states, highlighting the pivotal role of local entrepreneurs. Rolle's journey into economics began in high school, but it wasn't until she saw her first Black economist professor at the University of Miami that she realized the potential for change. Her experiences at Howard University reinforced the importance of innovation and creativity in solving long-standing problems. Rolle believes that new solutions are required to address old problems,...
